Answer-first guide
What belongs in a product handoff before prototyping?
Short answer
A useful pre-prototype handoff packages the source sketch or notes, the views needed to explain the idea, a plain-language part list, intended behavior, known constraints, and explicit open questions. The goal is not to finish the design yourself. It is to help the next person see the same product idea you are trying to describe.
What to check
- Keep source images, notes, and a draft visual together.
- List the main parts and what each one is meant to do.
- Call out materials, size ranges, motion, and user interactions when known.
- Label questions that need a designer, engineer, or prototype partner to answer.
Important limits
- A handoff brief does not replace requirements, drawings, or testing plans.
- Do not assume a prototype partner can infer missing constraints correctly.
- Avoid sharing sensitive product information during an early public validation phase.
